Moon setting over Avalon.
Somerset.
1st September 2004
The Somerset Levels with Glastonbury Tor rising above them attract myths and stories like flies to sugar. On a candy pink morning like this with the mist hanging in the vale it is easy to see why the place has a reputation for mystery.
We had visited Glastonbury the day before and it seems the town thrives upon it’s mythical past and connections to Arthur and the Isle of Avalon.
The result is shop after shop selling magic crystals and fairy wind chimes. This Mystical marketing scheme is nothing new, as it dates back at least as far as the medieval monks that conveniently claimed to have found the grave of King Arthur in the 12th century, a few years after the old abbey church had burned down.
Here the sinking moon seemed almost to reflect the drowning of any real, atmopheric magic of this place under the rising tide of Feng Shui water features.
